March for Meals

The Cranston Herald ·

As part of the March for Meals fundraising and awareness campaign this month, Meals on Wheels of RI Executive Director Meghan Grady and Ward 1 City Councilwoman Lammis Vargas, above left, made a visit Monday to the Cranston home of Cranston Meals on Wheels clients Stephen and Ann Cushman. Monday’s meal delivery included honey mustard chicken breast with rice pilaf, Brussel sprouts, pumpernickel bread and a fresh pear.

The Cushmans, both 88, have been Meals on Wheels of RI clients since June 2020. This year, they will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary.

Stephen, a native of Cranston, worked at the Narragansett Brewing Co.’s brewery for 30 years until its closure in 1981, after which he went into carpentry until his retirement. He is also a U.S. Air Force veteran. Ann, who is originally from Central Falls, worked for Industrial National Bank.

The Cushmans have four sons, including a retired Cranston police office and a teacher at Cranston High School East, as well as four grandchildren.

Later Monday, the City Council unanimously passed a resolution sponsored by Vargas and Council Vice President Ed Brady recognizing March as March for Meals Month in the city.
