An extended period of deep, freezing temperatures — with daytime air in single digits and wind chills below zero — has created sights, sounds and vistas rarely seen anymore.

Residents here are not used to seeing the Palmer River freeze, Hundred Acre Cove locked in ice, or Bristol Harbor a solid sheen of frozen salt water.
