May Breakfasts

A tasty Rhode Island tradition

It’s time again for the unique Rhode Island tradition of May breakfasts. On May 1, which is May Day – often on the first Saturday in May – these spring breakfasts are held in church halls, fire stations, community centers and grange halls – a tradition that dates back to 1867 when the first May breakfast was held. The quintessential May breakfast of modern times is held every year at the Oaklawn Community Baptist Church, 229 Wilbur Avenue in Cranston. The menu includes scrambled eggs, ham, corn bread, clam cakes and homemade apple pie, all served family style. May baskets and homemade fudge are also sold. Another popular May breakfast takes place at the Norwood Baptist Church, 48 Budlong Avenue in Warwick. From 7-10am on May 5, they’ll be serving eggs to order, ham, bacon, home fries, baked beans, cereal, muffins, pies and rolls. Their May baskets will feature fudge and fresh flowers.
